Biologic effects of radiation
SOMATIC GENETIC
— Chromosomal mutations
— Point mutations
• Delayed Radiation injury (Months or years after irradiation).
- Skin:-Radiation dermatitis
- Basal cell and squamous cell Ca (increased risk)
- Heart : Percardits (constrictive)
- Myocardial ischemia and fibrosis
- Lungs:- Radiation pneumonitis causing dyspneoa, chronic cough, and diminished lung function.
- Kidney and UB:- Delayed peritubular fibrosis, vascular damage, and hyalinization of glomeruli.
- G.I.T:- Esophagitis, gastritis, entenitis, colitis and proctitis can result. Delayed injury to small blood vessels causes chronic ischemia, ulceration and atrophy of the mucosa and fibrosis that can cause strictures and obstruction.
- Eyes and CNS:-Cataract, retinal damage can occur. Brain show necrosis and demyelination and paraplegia can occur. This is called transverse myelitis.
• Radiation induced chromosonal aberration can occurs both in acute and chronic radiation therapy.
• Infertility can occur in men or women.
