• H. pylori colonization induces chronic superficial gastritis, which fncludes both mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cell infiltration of the mucosa.
• (The term gastritis should be used specifically to describe histologic features; it also has
been used to describe endoscopic appearances and even symptoms, neither of which have
been inked to microscopic findings or to the presence of H pylori.
• The immune response to H. pylori includes both the production of antibody (local and systemic) and a cell-mediated response but is ineffective in clearing the bacterium.
