• All candida species pathogenic to humans are also
encountered as Commensal of human, particularly in mouth, stool and vagina. Candida is not normally a resident of skin.
• Oral thrush is common in acute
HIV infection and becomes increasingly common late in the disease as
CD4 cell count falls. At CD4 count <50, esophageal thrush also became
common.
• These are gram positive.
• Bladder thrush is treated with bladder irrigations with
Amphotericin B (50 mg/ml for 5 days), oral fluconazole can
be used if no bladder catheter in place.
• Infant, old age and pregnancy are important risk factors
for superficial candiadiasis.
