In patients with intact thirst mechanism, the plasma sodium is normal to slightly increased. The urine osmolality is less than plasma osmolality, less than 295 mOsm/kg. The plasma osmolality is greater than 295 mOsm/kg. Urine volume is high, generally more than 3 L per 24-hour period. DDA VP (desmopressin acetate) is the best treatment for chronic central diabetes insipidus.
