In a patient of CCF, cardiac glycosides produce the following, except
B. Prolong the duration of myocardial contraction
C. Increase the vagal tone of the heart
D. Diuretic effect
Ans. B. Prolong the duration of myocardial contraction
Cardiac glycosides inhibit the membrane bound
sodium potassium ATPase of the cardiac cell thus increasing the calcium
concentration inside the cell. Therefore they increase the force of contraction
of the myocardium positive inotropic effect. . They decrease the duration of
systole, which allows more time for the ventricular filling. It decreases the
heart rate by stimulation of the vagus. It increases urine output by improving
renal perfusion.
