Medical PG Preparations | Neostigmine

Neostigmine can reverse the actions of the following skeletal muscle relaxants, except:

A. D-tubocurarine
B. Succinylcholine.
C. Gallamine.
D. Pancuronium.

Ans. B. Succinylcholine.

Neostigmine is a reversible anticholinesterase that prevents the hydrolysis of acetylcholine thus preserves endogenous acetylcholine. In addition they can directly act on the neuromuscular junction. Thus they are useful in overdosage of skeletal muscle relaxants that produce competitive blockade at the neuromuscular junction e.g. tubocurarine, gallamine, pancuronium, etc. They have a synergistic action with the skeletal muscle relaxants that act by depolarization. They do not reverse but can enhance the neuromuscular blockade produced by depolarizing agents for e.g. succinyicholine.
