Bacteroides are the most common anaerobes isolated from clinical specimens. They possess capsular polysaccharides which appear to be vimlence factors. The genus bacteroides proper now includes the important species B. fragilis and other such as B. vulgaris, B. distasonis, B. thetaiotaomicron. B. fragilis is the most frequently isolated and often recovered from blooD: pleural, peritoneal fluids, CSF, brain abscesses, wounds, and urogenital infections.
