Primary
amebic meningoencephalitis is a fulminant, hemorrhagic, necrotizing
meningoencephalitis with a limited purulent exudate. It occurs in healthy
children and young adults and is rapidly fatal. It is caused by free-living
amebas, most commonly by the amebo-flagellate Naegleri fowleri.
Six
well-documented survivors of N .fowleri infections have been reported based on
treatment with intravenous and intrathecal amphotericin B, intravenous
miconazole, and oral rifampin.
