Increased Anion Gap | PGI MCQs for MD MS Preparations

Increased anion gap is seen in

A. Enterocutaneous fistula
B. Illeostomy fistula
C. Lactic acidosis
D. DKA
E. Cardiac failure

Ans. C. Lactic acidosis ; (D) DKA ; (E) Cardiac failure :
• There are four principal causes of high anion Gap acidosis:
— Lactic acidosis
— Ketoacidosis
— Ingested toxins
— Acute and chronic renal failure
• Diarrhoea, enterocutaneous fistula, ileostomy fistula, ureterosigmoidostomy cause normal A.G acidosis,
* Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA) is an example of NORMAL Anion Gap Acidosis.

* Cardiac failure cause lactic acidosis, so it is also one of the causes of high anion gap acidosis.
