GIST:
• Originate from the interstitial cell of cajal (intestinal pacemaker).
• Common in stomach
• Tyrosine kinase
activity is high in these tumors.
• C- KIT mutations are seen.
• 70% spindle cells and 30% epithelial cells.
• Benign GIST are 2-3 times more frequent than malignant.
• Lymph node metastasis is rare.
• Liver is involved in metastasis.
• Manifest in fourth decade.
• Bleeding is the main presentation in gastric GIST, bleeding and obstruction in small intestinal.
• Expresses CD 117 and CD 34.
• Treatment margin negative resection and adjuvant therapy with Imatinib.
• Follow up treatment is done with PET.
